METAIRIE, La. -- Marques Colston was riding shotgun with his business manager Mike Harris behind the wheel last winter when Harris turned to Colston.

"I have a surprise for you," Harris told him. "We're heading to a gospel [music] awards show and you're going to present an award."

Colston's face went blank as he shook his head, immediately turned off by the idea.

"You know I wouldn't want to do that," he reminded Harris, in case the manager had forgotten that his quietest client's least favorite place was in the limelight. Harris said that all Colston had to do was read a few lines on stage -- it was good PR, he'd be paid well and he'd be done in five minutes.

"If you don't call and tell them I'm not doing it, I will jump out of this car right now," Colston said, putting his hand on the door handle as the car sped down the highway. "I am not kidding. I will jump out of this car."

Harris knew calling the New Orleans Saints and explaining how one of their star receivers was injured might not be a call he'd want to make. Instead, he dialed the awards show and said there had been a change of plans. Read more...

He describes himself as part-time publicist, personal assistant, accountant, alarm clock, bouncer and even a father figure when he needs to be. If you haven’t heard the name Michael Harris, you’ve most certainly felt his impact. He’s the dude who saw the potential in Marques Colston long before he went in the 7th round of the draft in 2006. He’s the guy who comes up with new ways to help Pierre Thomas interact with his fans. And if Lance Moore ever becomes a sports commentator, he’ll probably have Michael Harris to thank.

Harris is the owner and creator of Best Sports Consultants. The self-proclaimed “Santa Claus of Sports” helps bring exposure to his clients, keeps them connected with fans, brings them media exposure and helps them establish and partner with credible foundations. The consulting firm has become a major player in the sports world. Beyond the NFL stars previously mentioned, Harris’ other A-list clients include the Colts’ Raheem Brock, the Texans’ Steve Slaton, Mike Bell and Saints players Courtney Roby and Lynell Hamilton.

Pierre Thomas donates $37,500 to Children’s Hospital

NEW ORLEANS – Pierre Thomas was instrumental in helping the New Orleans Saints win their first Super Bowl championship earlier this year, but the football star’s skills aren’t limited to the gridiron. In September, Thomas appeared on NBC's special NFL themed episodes of its “Minute To Win It” game show and won $37,500. Thomas will donated his winnings to Children’s Hospital of New Orleans during a check presentation on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010.

“A lot of people hailed us as heroes this year, but the people at Children’s Hospital are my heroes,” Thomas said. “The things that happen at that hospital are utterly amazing. We’re blessed to have them as part of our community, and I want to do what I can to let them know it.”-Pierre Thomas

Erik Coleman was drafted in the fifth round of the 2004 NFL draft by the New York Jets.

Coleman started every game for the Jets over the next three seasons, and by all accounts was a solid contributor both on and off the field.

Jets fans called him “Coolman.” He earned a reputation as a consistent tackler whose coverage skills were average at best.

Coleman was slowed in 2006 after an appendectomy, but returned to form in 2007.

In 2008, Coleman was due $3 million from the Jets and was released as a salary cap casualty.  Read more...

Saints WR Moore Visits Clinton School

Eastside Elementary Wins $10K Grant

CLINTON, Miss. -- New Orleans Saints wide receiver Lance Moore stopped in Clinton Wednesday to help local students get in shape.

Moore paid a visit to Eastside Elementary School, one of 32 schools in the nation to win a $10,000 grant through the Back to Football Friday contest. It's a program created by the NFL and United Way to help make youth wellness a priority.

Along with the grant, each school gets a visit from a professional player. Moore showed the students a few exercises he hopes they'll use at home.

"We can't stress enough how important it is for kids to take care of themselves from an early age," Moore said. "That means working out. That means eating as healthy as possible and understanding that the decision they make now will affect their bodies the rest of their lives."

The grant will be used to purchase heart monitors for students to use in gym class, as well as a walking track at the new school on Arrow Drive.
